The next day, heavy snow forced the children to stay home from school. Joseph and Peter were looking out the window, watching large snowflakes float to the street below, when they saw a big man dressed in what looked like a uniform coming to their apartment. Hurriedly, Joseph called out, “Mother, there’s a man coming to our door!”

Joseph’s mother rushed into the room. “Oh, is it a police officer?” she whispered to herself. Her face looked pale with fright.

The man in uniform walked up the inner stairway and knocked on the door. Joseph stayed close to his mother, who put her arm around him to steady herself. As she opened the door, the man asked, “Is this where Mrs. Kjar lives?”

“Yes, sir,” stuttered Mother.

“My name is Johan Nicolai Madvig,” the man said firmly. “May I come in?”

Mother Kjar stepped partially behind the door and put a protective hand on Joseph’s shoulder. Joseph was afraid, thinking the man looked like an army general.

“There is no need to fear,” the man explained. “I am a professor at the University of Copenhagen. Last night, I had a dream from the Lord in which I was told that there was a poor, hard-working woman living in this apartment building on the second story in the rear who was in need. I have come here to help you. How much money do you need?”

Joseph could hardly believe his ears.
